In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when six replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth.
Why watched - I have not yet seen Blade Runner (mostly because it was released before I was born), and know that it was one of the most important and talked about films from the 80's. I finally got round to borrowing it and watching it.
This has to be one of the hardest reviews I have yet written, I don't really know what to say about this film, and for once i'm not even sure if I liked this film or not. I think i liked some of the film and some of it was too raw. I supposed its like comparing it to A Clockwork Orange, its so grim and raw you cant say you enjoyed it but its such a classic to watch (although this film isnt close to the rawness of Clockwork Orange). I think what i mean is its not a film to love in the sense the plot is heartwarming, but a film to love as an Icon of the times.
Firstly the story, the filming etc was very interestingly done, set in the future, (which makes me laugh now because we are so close to that future its a cross between things that are already outdated (most of the computer systems) and things that are still so far fetched(like flying cars). I liked the sci-fi aspect to this film, with the idea of these more human than human robots, with references and ideas of Frankenstein, of wanting to be human and to meet their maker. The story was gripping and interesting and was easy enough to follow and understand.
I think my biggest problem is that its been so long since its was made, because its over 20 years old, I am never a big fan of watching old films. I love the fact that it was so typically 80's and you can see that in the design. And it is such a big cult film of the time. Although i have seen a lot recently that is more technological advanced that possible would have spoilt aspects of this film for me. I think some of it was uncomfortable to watch (like eye gouging) and it put you on edge. I can see why it is such a classic film, as well as a poignant film of the time.
