The Illusionist - Sylvain Chomet

I think the best description of the film is as follows “An 80-minute, hand-drawn animated French film without dialogue and with one of the most depressing finale acts ever committed to celluloid: this is The Illusionist. It’s also some sort of divine masterpiece.”

Set initially in Paris, through London, Scotland and eventually settling in Edinburgh this film follows the life of a magician and his dying art. No one is interested in his work and as he travels he finds that less and less people are coming to his shows. Along the way his magic entices a young girl, bored of her humdrum life, naïvely she latches onto him and being unworldly does not quite understand the value of money, the magician does nothing to discourage that, and produces gifts and treasures as if by magic, working extra hard to keep the illusion up.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part Two

The final part to the Harry Potter Series, where Harry must defeat the final Horcrux's and go into a face to face battle with Voldemort.

I went to see this at the IMAX cinema in 3D.  Visually this film on the big screen was stunning. The images were so crisp and clear and defined, and the 3D although not always popping into the audience, gave this film a whole new level of depth. The Directors had really gone all out to make this a visually spectacular experience. The digital photography, scenery and props were fantastic in this film. The snake and the effects were so realistic, and almost (wands excluded) believable.

Blood Diamond - Edward Zwick

Blood Diamond, follows the story of diamond hunting in Sierra Leone.  The rebels want the diamonds to purchase weapons, the government want to crack down on illegal diamond hunting.  We follow Danny (Leo DiCaprio), a diamond smuggler, who gets caught up in doing the right thing, alongside wanting to exploit the rare diamond for what it is. The farmer (Dijimon Hounsou) who finds the rare diamond, who just wants to rescue his family.  And the journalist (Jennifer Connelly) who wants to exploit the stories of Blood Diamonds.

I am not always a huge fan of these types of films but it was cheep and it looked quite interesting.  Overall i quite enjoyed this film, following a story line i'm not so familiar with, but was quite interesting.  A little bit predictable, with a few twists and turns.  A few good acting moments and a few really dodgy ones.  I think it was nice you weren't always sure what side Danny was on, and depending on the situation you saw both the baddy and the goody in him.   Although Danny (aka Leo DiCaprio) did have a very dodgy accent throughout and it just didn't seem natural made me laugh throughout this film.

Overall quite a good little blockbuster film from Hollywood, interesting plot line, some dodgy accents and a wee bit of predicability, and not so complicated you could easily follow the story.

Zombieland - Ruben Fleischer

Zombieland is a comedy about the world taken over by Zombies.  Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is scared of everything but somehow managed to survived so far,  Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) is on a mission to find a Twinkie, join forces with Wichita (Emma Stone) and her kid sister Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) who just want to find their way to pleasure-land for some last time fun.

Little Miss Sunshine - Jonathan Dayton

Little Miss Sunshine is a about an rather eccentric, weird and wonderful family who take a road trip to rally behind their daughter to compete in a Beauty Pageant. However its not an easy ride with many weird and wonderful mishaps along the way.  The youngest is not exactly what you would expect from a beauty queen, the older brother has taken a vow of silence, the mom believes in always telling the truth, the dad is a bit of a looser who is desperately trying to sell his motivation and winning programme with no success. Coming along for the ride is the moms brother who recently got picked up from hospital for suicide attempts and a crazy old grandfather who has been kicked out of the local retirement home.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - Niels Arden Oplev

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is a swedish film, based on a very popular book (part of a series of three).  40 Years ago, Harriet disappeared from a family gathering, her Uncle has dedicated his life to finding out the truth. He hires a renowned journalist Blomkvist to help find out the real story, who is currently having his own battle after being set up and faces a prison sentence.  Lisbeth is a hacker who becomes involved in the story (who has her own demons to face) and ends up helping Blomkvist discover the truth. (Yes all slightly confusing till you watch the film/read the book where it all makes a lot more sense.)

Micmacs - Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Bazil our main character, dad got killed by a land-mine and later on in his life he gets shot in the head by a stray bullet.  Loosing his job and his home, he gets adopted by a group of eccentrics living off a scrapheap.  With his new band of friends he goes on a revenge streak of the two arms dealers that changed his life.

Inception - Christopher Nolan

Inception is a blockbuster hollywood hit, that focuses on Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team who uses modern technology to incept peoples dreams. He is given a mission to alter the state of a man's mind to make him crumble his dads multi-million pound empire. But this is much harder than Cobb has ever done before.

The Lovely Bones - Peter Jackson

I read the book recently and wanted to see the film. I think its probably one of the best films i have seen for a while.  Now i am not one to be upset that the book doesn't match up with the film because i understand you cant always portray the book in vision and visa versa. However i think Jackson did a very good job of interpreting the book.  I thought the book was good but a bit to commercial however the film did it justice and i actually loved the film. Although he did miss out a few key points, he made up for this in the way he portrayed the story in which i think enhanced the film. Their is one point of the Novel that really pissed me off and i didn't like what Alice Seabold did with it in the novel (I wont spoil the actual point). However it was portrayed in a much nicer way in the film which i thought was impressive.

The Triplets of Belleville - Sylvain Chomet

The Triplets of Belleville is a strange and curiously wonderful film from france.  A lonely little boy Champion living with his Grandma recieves his first bycle and from that moment on his life goal is to race in the Tour de France.  No sooner has the race begun, he is kidnapped by men in black suits. His aunt goes to find him, and happens across the Triplets of Belleville, three music hall stars, and they go to battle against the french mafia.

OH did i mention the dog, he is prob the best character in this plot, he is fat, he is clumsy and he likes to bark at trains. But in a weird and wonderful way he is cute and is very funny.

Narcissa and the valley of the wind - Studio Ghibli

One of the studios first films in 1984, portraying environmental and post apocalyptic undertones. The story is based on a toxic world, polluted by humans. Most of the world in is ruin, taken over by the Sea of Decay, toxic plant life which kill when breathed in.  The only survivors are a few scattered villages and some insects (terrifyingly large ones).  Narcissa is the princess of the Valley of the Wind try's to save the world by working with the insects and the toxic plants.  However in a typical good vs evil plot their are those who want to 'save the world' by burning it and starting again.  A war breaks out over competing villages both who believe they are doing the right thing to stop the Sea of Decay spreading.
